Today Ralph worked on a very important task – getting our laundry hooks up installed! It went pretty well, but we didn’t have a chance to try it out before we left for Denver, so we’re crossing our fingers…
Speaking of Denver, John worked on getting a spare bedroom set for Charlie to stay in during the day While Ralph is working. It’s been super hot lately, so he hooked up one of the window air conditioners, and gave his a soft place to sit! Sounds nice to me!
Yeah, so that took longer than we expected! A few carloads turned out to be quite a bit. Sunday we made several trips back and forth. I took Monday off and spent all day cleaning and packing, then we took a few more loads when John got home from work. Finally Tuesday after work we just did a few final touch ups, and took two last loads. It would have been one, but I would have had to walk! My car had slipped a belt that morning, so we were down to just one car. We took a few final photos of our first home together, and turned in the keys.
At the house, Ralph has been making a lot of progress in the kitchen. Once he got the plumbing in the kitchen fixed, he got cabinets in, the countertops cut (just not attached), the sink in, the dishwasher hooked up, the disposal installed, and the gas pipe ran for the stove. Of course, things couldn’t have just gone in easily. I very helpfully noticed after Ralph had it installed that there wasn’t a switch for the disposal, so that caused a bit of a hold up. Then, our brand new dishwasher started leaking – so we have someone scheduled to come look at it next week! John and I also got our pantry built.
Well, moving day has finally come. John and I were only up until about 2, which we’re counting as a success. (In the photo, he’s holding a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Late Night Snack, posing like Jimmy Fallon does in the picture). We ran out to get the truck doughnuts, and two of John’s friends from work, Dave and Steve, were just arriving as we did.
John felt like someone should stay with the truck, since we were parked in the fire zone, so I got the easy job of sitting and reading. It was a popular moving day – at one time we were one of 4 moving trucks lined up outside our apartment. We got there first, so we got the best spot. The moving place had upgraded us to a gigantic truck, since they lost the keys to the one we had reserved, but even so we ended up making two trips – one with furniture and one with boxes. Dave and Steve were real troopers and stayed until the late afternoon helping us get everything. John measured it, and it is about 300 feet from our apartment door to where we parked the truck. It was amazing how much faster unloading went!
We ended up getting most things, but still have a couple of car loads to do, mainly small things that didn’t pack real well.
Back at the house, Ralph was starting to put in the cabinets, and realized that the sink pipe was in too bad of shape and had to go. When he pulled it out, it was clogged badly and had holes in it! Luckily, it had just been draining to the basement.
John and I were excited to get home today, because the carpet was installed! It makes a huge difference it the room from the linoleum! I had been wondering about the color, but we all like it. John is already planning on making all future house guests remove their shoes, not because he is worried about dirt, but because he likes walking on it so much! We spent some time finishing up the master bedroom, installing the light and putting on faceplates, so at least our room will be ready for us to move in. Earlier in the day Ralph had started hanging the kitchen cabinets. John and I booked it out of there pretty quickly though, as we move tomorrow and have rather a lot of packing to do!
Big big news today! The countertops finally came in! And they’re beautiful! After standing around and admiring them for awhile, John and I got to work. We started the second coat on the stairs, but didn’t get very far as Ralph had been giving me painting tips and I realized I wasn’t using enough paint, so we ran out. Ralph worked on more electrical.
Ralph got back late last night, and spent the day working on our electrical boxes, getting ready for upgrading our service to 200 amps. John was feeling a bit better and helped me paint the hallway. It’s hard to tell much of a difference in the photos, but it is a nice gray.
John still isn’t feeling well, so he stayed home from work. I needed to pick up more rollers in order to get the second coat in the dining room, and realized in the Home Depot parking lot that I didn’t have any keys to the house! John was feeling well enough to meet me at the house and let me in, but not paint. He went back and worked on packing the apartment kitchen. I got the second coat on (which looks much better after the paint dried) and made it home by 9!
